1. Please introduce your name, who you are, which country are you staying in and your area of IM expertise
Hi there, I’m Melvin Ng from Malaysia. You can read more about my background over here:
https://www.melvinng.com/about-melvin-ng/
Although I dabble a bit in the IM niche as well as other niches, my expertise is in making money from free search engine traffic in those low competition niches. You could say that my forte is in KW research, SEO and PPC.
2. Share with us your first success in Internet Marketing and how did you do that
I started off in IM quite a while back, if I’m not mistaken, around 2002. Since I was not an IT person, I had to struggle quite a bit in learning everything.
However, I persevered, and eventually wrote a short ebook in the IM niche called Copycat Marketing. It did made me a few thousand dollars but it wasn’t enough.
My real success only came when I went out of the IM niche, that was when I had a product in the speed reading niche, and at the same time I was making money from Adsense and affiliate marketing (via PPC traffic).
Eventually I quit my job a few years back and went into it full time. Never looked back since!
3. Share with us one obstacle which you have overcome and you have learnt alot from it
I had 2 major obstacles which I needed to overcome:
– changing my mindset from being an employee to being an entrepreneur, which means taking calculated risks, investing in tools and services for my business and outsourcing. I started off by trying to stinge on everything. That costs me quite a bit of time. I might have succeeded much faster had I treated this as a real business instead of a part time income project.
– learning the simple tech stuff. The only experiece I had prior to starting out in IM was checking emails. I don’t even use it for chats. I didn’t know anything about html, or how cimple codes work. There was once, a friend tried to explain to me how to ‘change file permission’ in an FTP program via Yahoo messenger, and after 3 hours, he simply gave up! So you see, I’m a complete tech dummy! Yet, I never gave up. Today, I’m still not exactly an IT expert, but at the very least, I know the basics to enable me to move forward. Everything’s learnable and nothing’s impossible.
4. Share with us one mindset tip you would like to share with others, especially those who find IM hard
After being more than 5 years in this business, I realised one thing, having focus is very important. In fact, my greatest breakthrough and success in this business came when I was focussing on one particular business model…how about that for a revelation.
A lot of people who are starting out don’t really believe having focus is important, hence they keep on trying new opportunities. You need to stick with something long enough before you can see results, and jumping around trying out different things certainly is not going to help you achieve success!
5. Share with us one product/ service of yours which you feel is very unique
Since I don’t really focus on the IM niches, I don’t really have anything in particular that I want to recommend. You can keep up with my life and my rants at my personal blog though at www.MelvinNg.com
6. One project you are working on right now and you would like my readers to know
I’m currently working on a project with 2 of my good buddies, Vince Tan and Gobala Krishnan. You can check it out at www.IMRenegades.com
7. One last tip you want to share with my readers
Persevere, and treat this as a business. You certainly don’t expect to open a restaurant or any other business and expect to make money right from day 1, and you certainly don’t expect NOT to invest a single dollar! So what makes it any different when you’re starting your Internet business. Sure you can have minimal investment, but be prepared to invest time and money if you’re really serious in building a successful business.
Good luck and all the best!

I like number seven, you have to have a plan. This is where many fail. It is like going on a road trip without a map (or hotel reservation.)
